Domain, Hosting, Website: What's the Difference?

The House Analogy
Think of your online presence like a house.
- **The domain** is your address — `yourbusiness.com`. It's how people find you.
- **The hosting** is the land the house sits on — the server that stores your files and serves them to visitors.
- **The website** is the house itself — the design, content, and features people actually use.
Why It Matters
You can have a great house on bad land (a beautiful site on slow hosting) and it'll feel sluggish. You can own a great address but have nothing built on it (a domain with no site). You need all three working together.
What You Actually Own
You rent your domain yearly and your hosting monthly or yearly. Your website is the asset you build on top. Always register the domain in your own name — it's yours, not your developer's.
Keep It Simple
A good partner handles hosting and domain setup for you, but make sure the accounts are in your name so you're never locked out of your own address.
