Core Web Vitals Explained Simply
Why These Three Numbers Matter
Core Web Vitals are Google's way of measuring how a page actually feels to use. They feed into ranking, and more importantly, they line up with whether visitors stay or leave.
The Three Metrics
**Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)**: How fast the main content appears. Aim for under 2.5 seconds. Big images and slow servers are the usual culprits.
**Interaction to Next Paint (INP)**: How quickly the page responds when someone taps or clicks. Heavy JavaScript makes this worse.
**Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)**: How much the page jumps around as it loads. Reserve space for images and ads so nothing shifts under a reader's thumb.
How to Improve Them
- Optimize and properly size images
- Cut or defer unnecessary scripts
- Set explicit dimensions on media
- Use a fast host and good caching
Measure, Don't Guess
Tools like PageSpeed Insights and Search Console show your real scores. Fix the biggest offender first, then re-test — small changes often move the needle a lot.
